New Jersey Championship of Online Poker II set to start April 16th

Party Poker and Borgata Poker are ready to jump off the second quarter with the 2015 New Jersey Championship of Online Poker. The NJCOP II will feature $1 Million Guarantee prize pools and will try and top the performance of the successful Garden State Super Series II, which generated prize pools just under $1.5 Million back in January.

The tournament will run from April 16 through April 26 with two Player’s Choice Events. These events will be NJCOP #1 – $20,000 GTD NLH Freezeout and NJCOP #21 – $20,000 GTD NLH 6 Max Double Chance (1 X Rebuy Only).

Buy-ins for the 35 events range from $50 to $1,000 and for the first time in New Jersey online poker history, players can play the tournament from their mobile devices and tablets through the Party Poker or Borgata Poker app. The tournament action runs every day for almost two weeks and peaks on the final day with seven tournaments, including the $200 buy-in NJCOP #30 Main Event with a $150,000 guarantee.

Borgata Spring Open

The tournament coincides with the Borgata Spring Poker Open and the WPT World Championship which should see a lot of players from out of town taking their shot at the virtual felts either while grinding live or when taking a day off from the live scene. It will be an exciting April for all poker players who play live and online. Let the action begin.

Two WSOP Online Poker Series in April & Reload Bonus

The second online poker series will be the NJ Turnpike series which caters to the lower stake players. It will feature eight turbo tournaments running at 6 pm nightly from April 19 – April 26. The buy-ins range from $1 – $20 with $8,000 in guaranteed prize pools. The NJ Turnpike series will have a leader board where the top 100 finishers at the end of the week will get rewarded tournament fees for every event played.

The Sunday Major Poker Report for New Jersey

March Madness is in full swing which may account for the decrease in players this weekend across all New Jersey regulated poker sites.

The $50,000 guarantee Sunday Major on Party Poker and Borgata Poker saw a decrease in players this week. A total of 288 players fired up this tournament versus 313 from last week. In the end, andend took down the top prize of $10,656. New Jersey Poker Pro Mike Gagliano, better known as Gags was the runner up cashing for $7,017.

WSOP.com and 888 Poker in New Jersey continue to offer a $35,000 guarantee for their Sunday major. In the winner’s circle was Smacster who will pad his bankroll by an extra $9,854.

Eddiegood86 was good enough to outlast a field of 58 runner to take down the 888 Poker Big Sunday $10,000 guarantee for $3,219.

Lastly, schaf4206 shipped the WSOP/888 Poker $10,000 Weekly Sunday Guarantee earning a $3,478 pay day.

Nevada & Delaware - Online Poker Shared Player Pool

Nevada & Delaware In Soft Launch Of Shared Online Poker Player Pool

The first steps to sharing player liquidity is currently in soft launch for the states of Delaware and Nevada in the two state’s respective online poker markets on March 24th, 2015.

888 Holdings, which runs 888 Poker in NJ and also powers WSOP.com in both NJ and NV cited the “Successful deployment of shared poker network across states of Delaware and Nevada in March 2015 creating significant competitive edge for 888 and its operating partners.”

What this means for Delaware & Nevada players

The interstate online poker agreement was signed back in February 2014 by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval and Delaware Governor Jack Markell. The combination of the player pools could be the pathway that opens up multi-state player liquidity if other states should come on board and offer regulated online poker.

While Delaware’s traffic numbers are just a drop in the bucket when compared to both Nevada and New Jersey, that doesn’t mean the impact of player pooling will necessarily be so. Seth Palansky, who is the the Vice President of Communications for Caesars Interactive/WSOP.com, goes on to say “DE players won’t be playing in WSOP satellites even when compact goes live. You still will play on DE sites.”

With this soft launch, the pooling will be between WSOP in Nevada and the 888-powered sites in Delaware. Delaware currently has three different online poker rooms, but all share a single player pool.

888 expected to launch another Nevada site

888 is expected to launch another poker room in Nevada with land based partner Treasure Island. There’s no date set in stone for the launch of 888 Nevada, but with the current events of the shared pools in NV and DE, the process may be a priority and launch sooner then late.

There is more behind the scenes work that is expected in order to make sharing player pools to work. Both the Nevada Gaming Control Board/Nevada Gaming Commission and the Delaware Lottery would need to work out any differences in regulations that exist between the two states. Both gaming bodies would need to test the products to check whether the measures protect every state and it’s players.

What this means for New Jersey

David Rebuck, Director of the Division of Gaming Enforcement in New Jersey, expressed interest in starting talks with Nevada to possibly share player pools in the future. If that should take place and an agreement can be reached, this would be huge for online poker in the U.S.

The results would probably see WSOP NJ and NV share player pools along with 888 NJ/DE/NV and could provide bigger guaranteed prize pools and more competition for their daily tournaments and Sunday major tournaments. Let’s cross our fingers and hope this goal can be reached by all three states that offer regulated poker.

March NJ Player Spotlight: Mike JohnnyDrama Haberman Jr.

Every month, we are looking to put the spotlight on different successful New Jersey grinders and get their story on poker and life.

Mike JohnnnyDrama Haberman out of Brick, New Jersey is one of the most successful and highly respected New Jersey poker players around. Some of his 2014 highlights include winning the Party Poker/ Borgata Poker $50,000 guarantee Sunday Major twice in May 2014 and five wins in the network’s daily $10,000 guarantee which all add up to $31,228. He finished the year in 6th place in the online player of the year race on Bluff’s Poker Database.

Hot Start To 2015

Now that we are in 2015, he is focused and determined to finish even stronger then last year. He started the year on a mission and made some noise in the Party Poker/Borgata Poker Garden State Super Series II, with ten cashes, four final tables, one outright win and earning close to $9,000 during that online series. Haberman has $201,707 in tracked online cashes according to Pocketfives.com which ranks him 5th in New Jersey. In the OPOY race on pokerdb, he currently sits in 3rd place.

The player known as JohnnyDrama online also has success in the live arena. He managed to get several cashes in 2014, including a runner up finish in a Borgata Summer Poker Open event for $8,239 and a 3rd place finish in a Rio DeepStack tournament during the 2014 WSOP earning $6,122.

NJPokerSite: How long have you been playing poker both live and online?

Mike Haberman Jr: I’ve only been taking the game serious for about the last year and a half. I wanted to take the game more serious before that, but never had the opportunities available.

NJPokerSite: Is poker your only source of income?

Mike Haberman Jr: Currently, poker is my only source of income.

NJPokerSite: What did you do before poker?

Mike Haberman Jr: I graduated from William Paterson University with a degree in Business Management and worked for a Wireless Retailer for a short period of time before playing poker.

NJPokerSite: How would you grade your 2014 performance with live and online poker?

Mike Haberman Jr: Overall I’m pleased with my performance for the year. Obviously there’s always room for improvement and that’s what we are trying to do this year.Improve everywhere we can.

NJPokerSite: Do does the competition of ranking websites like Pocketfives or Pokerdb motivate you?

Mike Haberman Jr: To a degree, absolutely. After a certain point, you really need a lot of 1st and 2nds to have any scores matter considering our small field sizes, and who is motivated to get 1st and 2nds.. thats where all the money is.

NJPokerSite: What was your most memorable tournament win in 2014?

Mike Haberman Jr: I would have to say the 50k outright win, it capped off a great month of poker and then i went to Vegas for the millionaire maker a couple days later, no luck in that but took 3rd in a Rio $185 deepstack.

NJPokerSite: Got any 2015 poker goals?

Mike Haberman Jr: My main goal is 2015 is to take my game to another level, hopefully the results follow. Hopefully we have a good Borgata Spring Poker Open!.

NJPokerSite: Do you see any benefits of being able to play online in NJ?

Mike Haberman Jr: Yes absolutely. It just makes the game so much more readily available for this that want to play and at relatively small stakes. Online poker in NJ is awesome, and I could only imagine how much better it could be with a couple states sharing player pools.

NJPokerSite: Do you feel it has improved your live game?

Mike Haberman Jr: To a degree yes. The biggest thing for live is getting the reps if you haven’t played a lot. Playing online gave me the ability to play live as I am sure it has done for many others.

New Jersey Online Poker Revenue Numbers Are Down for February

The total number generated from New Jersey’s online poker sites tallied at $2,045,655 in February. This represents a decline of 34% when it is compared to February 2014. You can see the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement report here: http://www.nj.gov/oag/ge/docs/Financials/PressRel2015/February2015PressRelease.pdf

Last year, the total online poker revenue for January and February was $6.5 million. In 2015, that number is $4.3 million which is down 33%. Other casino games so far have been showing more success in revenue number versus online poker.

One way to help pump life into the online poker portion of the business is to have shared player liquidity with other states such as Nevada, Delaware and any other states that come on board with regulated poker in the future.

The Entrance of PokerStars, Full Tilt, & Pala Interactive

Pala interactive was planning to enter the New Jersey market, but since has had a change of heart and currently put those plans on hold. Then there is the anticipated entrance of PokerStars along with Full Tilt into New Jersey which is still pending approval of a gaming license from the NJ DGE.

Currently, the online poker sites that are operating in New Jersey are Party Poker, Borgata Poker, WSOP and 888 Poker. In the past year, Ultimate Poker and Betfair poker shut down their operations due to a lack of success.

New Jersey Championship of Online Poker II Draft Schedule Released

On March 9th, Party Poker and Borgata Poker New Jersey announced the provisional timetable for the second annual New Jersey Championship of Online Poker (NJCOP), which will run from April 16-26.

As of right now, the NJCOP II draft schedule will offer 32 events which will boast $1 million in guaranteed prizes. This would be a $400,000 increase from the first NJCOP which was $600,000 in guaranteed prize pools.

Player Concerns

PartyPoker’s representative Colette took to Pocketfives New Jersey wall and 2+2 to get player’s feed back on the drafted schedule which can be seen here: http://imgur.com/YO833iT

gss screenshot

A few concerns that players have expressed was the constant software crashes that occur with this network. Everyone is hoping that Party Poker will deploy fixes for the issues prior to the start of this series. New Jersey poker players have been experiencing disconnects and software crashes for several months now.

NJCOP Features

Back to the NJCOP II draft schedule. The Main Event, which features a $200 buy-in, will have a guarantee of $150,000 on April 26. One thing that appears to stand out with the draft schedule are the buy in ranges for the rest of the events. They currently range from $50 up to $1,000. So it gives the impression that this series was created for the online pro or players with bigger bankrolls. Buy-ins ranging from $5 – $25 are not offered.

This leads one to believe that there will be an enormous amount of satellite offerings by Party Poker and Borgata Poker so that players with lower bank rolls can qualify for the majority of these events. Another thing to point out is that NJCOP will coincide with the Borgata Spring Poker Open that will be running at the Borgata Hotel and Spa in Atlantic City from April 14 through May 1st. So plenty of players from out of town may fire up their laptops and tablets to grind the virtual felts as well.
